The Energy Innovation Agency has secured an additional £10 million in funding as part of an extended commitment from Innovate UK’s Innovation Accelerator programme. This significant investment will enable the Agency to accelerate its mission of driving clean energy innovation and supporting the Greater Manchester region’s transition to net zero. The funding forms part of a wider £30 million extension to the programme, now running through to March 2026, which targets three high-potential regions: Greater Manchester, Glasgow City Region, and the West Midlands.
The Innovation Accelerator programme is designed to empower local regions by aligning national strategies with locally informed decision-making. By recognising regional strengths and fostering co-creation, the programme supports transformative R&D projects that drive economic growth, technological advancement, and job creation. The programme has already funded 26 high-impact projects across the three regions, focusing on areas such as net zero, health innovation, digital transformation, and advanced manufacturing.
This extension contributes to the Energy Accelerator for Non-Domestic Buildings (EANDB) programme, projects benefitting from the first round of funding include:
Verv Energy & the NHS: Collaborating to develop smart energy solutions for healthcare facilities, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing operational costs.
Leigh Works & Nemiah: Partnering to implement low-carbon technologies in manufacturing processes, contributing to the region’s net zero goals.
QEnergy & Newbank Garden Centre: Working together to integrate renewable energy systems, promoting sustainability in horticultural operations.
The Agency has also played a leading role alongside the University of Salford in the Future Homes Project. This project aims to create a globally competitive centre for research and innovation in net zero housing in Greater Manchester, by supporting innovators in bringing novel low or zero technologies to market.
These projects exemplify the impact of innovation and the potential for local solutions to address global challenges.
